Thank you for your insight as always. The distribution landscape has really changed and I think many of us really need to understand how to build an audience and self-distribute our content to that audience. Most of us simply want to create content, but learning how to market our content has become much more important.

Building an audience is a whole other topic and a mostly expensive proposition in today's market of paid audience acquisition :) I stay away from that for smaller films as there simply isn't the budget to give it what it needs. Self distribution is easy nowadays through platforms like Film Hub. How to market to your audience is another question and wondering if that's even viable in the indie landscape anymore unless you can figure out 'free' audience acquisition methods or dabble in paid acquisition to the extent you have budget left for it. Open to ideas and thoughts though on this!

My main method is to find those groups that match the film subject material if it is at all possible. Really depends on the subject matter of the film and whether it can be defined to attract certain groups. It is a lot of work, but I try to define who is the target audience for the film as I write the script. Almost like paid ad targeting. Find those specific groups.

Yep that's definitely a useful tactic especially for docs on specific and/or social topics
