Film Distribution Keeps On Changing
My new methodology around distribution + a July 4th Flash Sale
Happy 2024 Midpoint! We made it :)
My last newsletter was almost a month ago when we talked about Funding For Distribution and What’s New In Distribution.
Since then I’ve been executing on many of the themes I discussed in those newsletters and have been diligently building out new digital first projects - mainly experimenting with low cost long and medium form series and stand alone films that can be distributed across the ‘new’ Streaming universe of AVOD and CTV and become profitable endeavors.
I’m in the beginning phases of this new vertical and will be sure to take you along for the ride and ‘build in public’ as much as possible, so you can learn from what I’m doing, mistakes I make along the way, and hopefully many successes.
All of this while also prepping an indie feature that we’ll be shooting this fall internationally - yes, to save costs and bring it in for a price that makes recoupment for the financier a remote possibility.
So that’s my midyear update - what’s yours??
Hit me up in the comments below and let me know!
My New Distribution Methodology
With all the changes to the Distribution landscape, honestly it feels like a shell of its former self.
I’ve seen sales agents return films to the producers and void contracts because after a year of repping, weren’t able to secure any meaningful sales. (So be sure you’re signing with an upstanding company who would do this!).
I then refer these filmmakers to upload their films on FilmHub because after a year in a sales agent’s catalogue, you’ll be hard pressed to find another sales agent to take on your film since it’s already been ‘shopped’ around.
Distribution has become much more about strategy…. strategy on domestic distribution (of which there’s still a few opportunities left), strategy around festivals and a real release plan. I’m in the throes of this right now on two films and we’re doing everything we can to milk festivals, press, and a domestic release because international potential on these films are limited (due to subject matter and genre).
Because of this, I’ve phased out my one-on-one Distribution Consulting and instead have combined all my expertise and methodology into my Coaching group FS Pro, where there’s several other members strategizing distribution strategies with me. Click this button to apply and join me!
If you join this week before the July 4 holiday, you’ll get a customized strategic plan for yourself and your film whatever stage you’re in. In other words, we’ll get you on-boarded and make sure you’re rowing in the right direction with your project.
Of course I’ll be there advising you every step of the way.
And you’ll get complimentary access to my two most recent courses Funding Strategies Playbook and Packaging Strategies Playbook (for yearly members only - valued at $279).
Just let me know once you register and we’ll make sure you get immediate access.
