Folks let’s face it - the traditional media gatekeeper ecosystem is going through some ‘challenges’ right now. Would you all agree?
If you read the news in the trades every day like I do, then you can see plain as day how filmmakers, producers, production companies….really everyone… are being thwarted by the current ‘contracting’ environment we find ourselves in with financiers, streamers, networks, and buyers of all stripes.
So what’s an independent producer to do?
Well even though the traditional ‘systems’ may be down, there’s still a whole world out there of people quietly making content for direct to consumer platforms like You Tube, Amazon Prime, and even social media.
We talked about having a proof of concept (POC) as part of your packaging arsenal as a powerful packaging lever, but that doesn’t have to be expensive to create. I’m seeing filmmakers utilize You Tube as a distribution platform to create a body of work that can indeed serve as a proof of concept for something bigger.
You know I’m all about an unconventional approach to packaging and these days you need cool stuff under your belt even to attract actors, directors, and producers to your project. A plain old script isn’t cutting it!
I’ve been leaning on digital series I made years ago to get new projects going and off the ground, so don’t discount the power of DIY style content at showcasing your talents and storytelling prowess.
On a handful of projects I’m working with first time feature directors and we’re using packaging tools like documentaries they’ve shot, commercials they’ve made, even podcast series produced to beef up our offering and add value to the project before approaching the market.
As always, keep thinking outside the box when packaging up what you have and make it a real opportunity before presenting it to anyone. It’s just that kind of market right now and plain old scripts and ‘interesting projects’ aren’t going to move the needle. 🤷🏻♀️
What questions do you want to brainstorm around this? I’m happy to bounce ideas around together in the comments section below.
