Stacey, I would LOVE a Film Economics series from you. That sounds exactly what this moment in the industry needs- more open channels of communication and discussion of how to get things done!
This could be interesting! Curious what a ball park estimate of attaching talent cost looks like? Is there anyone working in the "build the audience" first space? Thought provoking as always Stacey! Thank you!
Hi Cherelynn, sorry what do you mean 'ball park estimate of attaching talent cost looks like'? Wasn't sure what you're asking! Also what do you mean is there anyone in the build the audience first space - can you please clarify? Thank you!
What I mean by ball park estimate is: when working in a low budget 5 million and under range it doesn't leave much money when millions are spent on name talent. I'm thinking it comes down to negotiating the contract cost with the talent agent. I've been tinkerin' in building the audience at cons, social live reads with digital gift and bread crumbing fans en route to the watch date. It's slow yet working. If I may be so bold as to say - I think the days of the A list talent paycheck are over as it's not sustainable even for the studios.
I'd love to see a newsletter on "how we made it" as it seems that when you dig into any given project, the specifics of how deals came together or how talent was attached ends up being completely unique to that project, within a wide, common scope of possibilities. A lot of time it ends up being a "who you know/who knows you" situation, but not always. I'm curious about both, as well as edge cases of luck/timing/brass-ballsiness, etc to get a project to keep moving forward AND not lose steam on any one of the hundred touch points.
