Since my last email on Funding Strategies Playbook For The New Year, I received some questions which I figured I’d answer here today….
But first, some context - in all the conversations I’m having right now, post-strikes, and with everyone who is trying to get projects green-lit for production next year there’s a whole lot of shaping and shifting around the finance plan side of things.
Everything from how/where to find equity, to reducing budgets in line with the marketplace, to what certain talent is ‘worth’…. really just how to fill gaps, sometimes gaping holes, in a finance plan. I’m in the throes of that now with several projects on my slate and we’re chipping away at all these things, but it requires aggressive pivoting, new approaches, frameworks, and even mindsets to adapt to what’s real in the marketplace.
So let’s cut to the chase and attack this head on! Here’s more about what I’ll be covering in my upcoming Funding Strategies Playbook course in the new year.
First of all, like I mentioned before, this isn’t a ‘traditional’ course like I’ve done in the past - this one will be delivered via Substack, in email form, to your inboxes, every week or two for the first couple months of the year. A framework to follow complete with downloadable resources and Q+A. The result: A plan by the end of Q1 you can apply to projects the entire year.
Topics included but not limited to:
• Production planning - budgets, optimizing tax credits, building a Producing team, engineering a Co-Production and pulling in international partners
• The Equity piece - how, when, where to figure this out. Deal making structures and red flags to look out for. Exercising financial discipline and prudence.
• The Sales Agent piece - new models of sales agent-as-co-producer, arriving at reliable estimates, and projecting pre-sales
• The Packaging piece - Directors, Actors, Producers, everything you need to build value in your project
• Debt - how, when, where to think about working with lenders, best practices, common obstacles, and red flags
