Opportunities Within Chaos
Believe it or not, there are opportunities for independents within the industry's current chaos. Indies can potentially prosper during turbulent times.
Since we last spoke so much has happened! Including the launch of a SAG strike. Wow. I won’t go into the nitty gritty on all that here as you can read much better coverage in other places, but instead I want to go back to talking about what’s relevant to us indies and that’s the opportunities within the current chaos.
We’ve talked a lot about opportunities lately - distribution opportunities galore being one of them and I’m still seeing lots of demand for completed films, series, and docs…. what we’re also seeing is new interest in financing projects that can actually go into production this year. For example, a project that may not have had financier interest a couple months ago could now look a whole lot more attractive in the current marketplace.
In some cases I’m taking projects that were passed on by distributors or financiers a couple months ago and re-submitting them now with more leverage in my favor. My guess is that in some cases it won’t make a difference but in others it will… and it’s certainly worth a try.
With studios and any other AMPTP-affiliated companies unable to continue their shooting schedules and in some cases, having their productions shut down mid stream, there could be a window of opportunity for independents who can get something in the can. As of right now the word from SAG is independent films and series can apply for the ‘interim agreement’ (some are calling it a waiver) and if accepted, can in fact keep their schedule in tact. We applied yesterday for one of my films in Post and are awaiting word back so I’ll update you all once I go through the process fully and know more.
To summarize - basically there’s a window of time right now where if you can position your project properly and get it into the right hands, not only can you potentially get into production but then have a completed film at the time when distributors are going to need new content the most.
What do you think? Are you in a position to push something out into the market right now?
→ EP Strategy Consulting Sessions
In lockstep with all this I’m offering EP Strategy Sessions via Zoom/Phone over the next 2-3 weeks. If that’s something you’re interested in, email me with details of your project, where you’re at, and what you’d like to get out of a 45-60 min consulting session. The goal from my side is to do triage on your project and help advise you on how to best move things forward. Simple as that.
For more info and fees, get in touch at stacey@filmspecific.com.
I’ll have a page up soon with a form to fill out, but in the mean time wanted to get this out there to start getting calls scheduled.
On that note, I’d love to field any questions below you all have about my opportunities within chaos theme…. just hit me up in the comments section below.
More soon and I hope you have a wonderful day ahead!

Yes!! I'm talking with post-personnel now to finally finish a feature I shot waaaaay long time ago!
This is a tshirt slogan right here: "the opportunities within the current chaos" and YES, on the hustle to put financing to a 6 episode series that could go into production asap to take advantage of a better distribution opportunity. It's a great time to be an indie! Thanks for the update!
